Funding for three research projects on the field of immunology
The Academy of Finland has granted funding for research on cancer and multiple sclerosis.
The Academy of Finland has distributed over two million euros of funding for five research projects on the field of immunology. The University of Turku hosts three of these projects.
The project directed by professor Sirpa Jalkanen studies cell trafficking in lymphatic vessels and its effect on immunodefence. The regulation of immune-cell trafficking may provide new tools for preventing the spread of cancer and for treating inflammatory diseases.
Professor Riitta Lahesmaa’s group is a part of a research consortium studying the regulation of the immune response and the development of induced regulatory cells in patients with multiple sclerosis. The project aims to provide a better understanding of the development of autoimmune diseases as well as to aid the development of better treatments and methods of prevention. The other group in the consortium is directed by professor Harri Lähdesmäki at the Aalto University.
The project directed by docent Nafis Rahman studies tumour immunity in prostate cancer. The project aims to develop novel treatment strategies targeting low immunogenic prostate cancer.
